Working in video games is something most people wouldn’t have thought twice about some forty years ago however in recent years it’s become a valid career in it’s own right. Whether you’re looking to work as a programmer, graphics designer, producer or musical director there are more career opportunities out there than ever before.
Game Designer: If you want to be the creative person behind developing an idea from story board to finished product then Game Designer is the job for you. If you’re serious about your chosen career, you can enrol for a 4yr bachelors degree in game design at an ever increasing number of colleges. Even though a good degree in the field doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a job at the end of it no degree ever does so if your ultimate goal is game designer, it certainly makes sense to start with a good education on the matter.
Programmer: After someone’s spent time and money developing an idea, they need to employ people to make that idea happen which is where the programmers come in. Programming in general is becoming a popular career so to really get somewhere in the field of video games you’re going to have education and experience that sets you apart from the rest. Ideally you should look to enrol on a relevant bachelors degree (from the numerous computing and engineering courses available) and try to secure work in a relevant environment alongside your study.
Animator: Similar to a Programmer, an Animator will be competent in similar computer software packages. The obvious difference being that their purpose is to design the art and imagery that the Programmers will then incorporate into the game. A degree in either art or computing is essential to break into this field and progression, as with any art, tends to come with recognition. To go far in this field you’ll need education, talent and a little bit of luck.
Musical Composer: There was indeed a real person behind that annoying Sonic the Hedgehog music; someone actually sat there and decided it would make the game more enjoyable! If you’ve got an ear for music and see yourself composing music and sound effects to accompany new releases then this just might be the career for you. As with any sought-after position, you’ll need to study for a relevant degree to stand a change of getting your foot in the door. Thereafter, as with an Animator, your progression will be heavily reliant on gaining steady recognition for the work you do.
Game Producer: The coveted position in the games industry usually only afforded to those that are both qualified and experienced. A lot of producers start out their careers as Programmers or Designers before rising through the ranks on the back of their merits and achievements. A Producer has the responsibility of the game as a whole and works to oversee the project, and those working on it, from design through to finished game. Most producers will deal with the legal side of things as well as liasing with marketing, production and testing to ensure that everything comes together on time and in the right way.
