Assessing career progression within the video games industry – Part 1

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Working in video games is something most people wouldn’t have thought twice about some forty years ago however in recent years it’s become a valid career in it’s own right. Whether you’re looking to work as a programmer, graphics designer, producer or musical director there are more career opportunities out there than ever before.

Game Designer: If you want to be the creative person behind developing an idea from story board to finished product then Game Designer is the job for you. If you’re serious about your chosen career, you can enrol for a 4yr bachelors degree in game design at an ever increasing number of colleges. Even though a good degree in the field doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a job at the end of it no degree ever does so if your ultimate goal is game designer, it certainly makes sense to start with a good education on the matter.

Programmer: After someone’s spent time and money developing an idea, they need to employ people to make that idea happen which is where the programmers come in. Programming in general is becoming a popular career so to really get somewhere in the field of video games you’re going to have education and experience that sets you apart from the rest. Ideally you should look to enrol on a relevant bachelors degree (from the numerous computing and engineering courses available) and try to secure work in a relevant environment alongside your study.

Animator: Similar to a Programmer, an Animator will be competent in similar computer software packages. The obvious difference being that their purpose is to design the art and imagery that the Programmers will then incorporate into the game. A degree in either art or computing is essential to break into this field and progression, as with any art, tends to come with recognition. To go far in this field you’ll need education, talent and a little bit of luck.

Musical Composer: There was indeed a real person behind that annoying Sonic the Hedgehog music; someone actually sat there and decided it would make the game more enjoyable! If you’ve got an ear for music and see yourself composing music and sound effects to accompany new releases then this just might be the career for you. As with any sought-after position, you’ll need to study for a relevant degree to stand a change of getting your foot in the door. Thereafter, as with an Animator, your progression will be heavily reliant on gaining steady recognition for the work you do.

Game Producer: The coveted position in the games industry usually only afforded to those that are both qualified and experienced. A lot of producers start out their careers as Programmers or Designers before rising through the ranks on the back of their merits and achievements. A Producer has the responsibility of the game as a whole and works to oversee the project, and those working on it, from design through to finished game. Most producers will deal with the legal side of things as well as liasing with marketing, production and testing to ensure that everything comes together on time and in the right way.

Why the video game industry is reaching new heights

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

The video game industry has been one of the fastest growing industries since it was created. It doesn’t matter if you look at Pong or Pac Man or Sonic or Halo, there have always been thousands upon thousands of gaming fanatics and casual gamers that are willing to spend thousands of dollars every year on video games. Video games appeal to people because they are fun, competitive, and they are easy learn but often hard to master. Also, most video games make themselves very clear on the screen. Unlike books or board games, there is little to no reading involved in video games; only sight and reflexes are involved. This combination of television and rockem-sockem robots-like movement of the hands make video games that much more accessible and compelling.

Of course, some people would argue that, eventually, gamers would grow bored of the same old two-handed bent-potato shaped controllers that are updated routinely merely by adding new buttons every time a new system comes out. Fortunately, the gaming industry knows of this weakness in design repetitiveness, and they can easily work around it. For, while the classic two-handed controller has served companies and customers well over the years, creative companies have always been trying to push the envelope in controller design. The most recent and obvious example of this would be the Nintendo Wii. The Wii turns video gaming into a whole new way to play for three reasons. Firstly, instead of staying put throughout an entire play session, the Wii player must make at least some movement throughout the game, because their Wiimote directly controls their character on screen. Secondly, the Wii takes full advantage of WiFi technology, meaning that millions of players can meet each other online and set up games with people who they’ve never even met or seen before. No one will ever have to call up their busy friends again if they just want a quick multiplayer game. Lastly, the Wii has been made completely backwards compatible. It cannot only play all the old Gamecube games, but it can also play whatever other games from past generation consoles customers choose to download to their Wii using Wii points.

Nintendo has been around since the early days of video games and has been a big proponent of the industry. But the added competition of Sony and Microsoft make the industry grow that much more. Because of this three-headed rivalry, there will never be a shortage of ideas and work flowing through the major companies, because they will always be trying to out-do each other. For customers, this is a dream come true. Not only do they have a huge amount of choices when deciding which video games and systems to buy, but they also have three major corporations competing directly for their attention. With the added information of gaming magazines and sites, customers can make educated choices and pick the best games to buy. The companies then learn which games their customers like, and can make even better games based on that data. In this way, the industry not only grows, but becomes better and better.

As technology evolves, game designers have even more options and ways to be more and more creative. Video game design is an art form, and the great thing about an art form is that it is only limited in terms of technology and the human imagination. The video game industry will continue to grow and grow because of its massive fan base and competitive market. There is no other business like the video game business. No other moves as quickly, and no other has so much room for improvement and creativity. And that is why the ever-exciting video game industry will never fail to not only reach new heights, but look to even greater ones.

Video Game Design Jobs – Which Job Is Right For You?

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Many gamers look at the games they play and dream of creating their own. Perhaps with a pet idea for a game that hasn’t been done yet. Maybe you think a particular game is brilliant, but the plot is so thin, surely a better writer could have pulled so much more out of the experience. If you find yourself thinking like this, maybe a video game design job is for you. Let’s take a look at what positions are available.

Lead designers write and program and organize. It is the responsibility of the lead designer to make sure the universe of the game is a place players will find interesting. The lead designer needs to keep track of the pulse of the gaming world, to know what is hot, what is cold and what gamers will expect in a new game. The lead designer tries to find the best compromise between the resources and time available and the needs of the project to create the best possible game, knowing where to cut corners and where to focus attention.

Another of the tasks is to ensure that everyone in the project understands and works towards the themes of the game. What seems like a minor change can cost weeks of work and waste thousands of dollars. The lead designer has to determine when it is worth those changes, and to plan well enough that changes aren’t needed more than a tiny amount of the time.

Game designers take the notes given to them by the others and turn them into virtual reality. Game designers are given parts of the game and are told to make each module work, and work together with the modules the other designers are managing. Game designers have to be good analysts and outgoing people who will seek out the other members of the team to make every piece work correctly together and leverage every skill and asset available to better the game.

They have to be able to figure out what is working, what isn’t working and what needs to be done to correct those problems. They also need to be good writers who can produce clear and concise reports and emails to communicate this with others.

Artists turn those short notes that say a dozen women in chain mail bikinis riding dinosaurs and carrying crossbows will then attack the party into a vision. In a very real sense, an artist did anything you see in the game.

There are artists specializing in character design, some who do the background images, others who create the equipment and even animals. Artists must understand how the images will be rendered, so they can create the best appearances while using the least possible amount of system resources.
