With the rapid growth in the gaming industry the last years you would think a lot has changed within the industry, but really it is not as bad as you would think. The new games offer better graphics, better sound and better quality, but people still play old games. There is some aspect to the charm of retro games that just makes them survive the resent invasion of new games. You have super realistic games with fantastic sound and storyline and still people play Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo. A game which hardly have a story, nothing more than repetitive lovable midi sounds and the graphics is nothing better than what you could draw in MS Paint. But even with all that the games are still like today, simply brilliant gameplay. The human mind and our ideas over how we want games wont develop in the same rapid way that graphics and sounds develop.
Personally just like a lot of other people I can enjoy both retro games and new games. There is something very innocent and appealing by controlling a character in 2D jumping on enemies and platforms. I like it. I do of course also find new games with good graphics and sounds and all this new technology cool, but it is not a must have for me to have fun with a game. Graphics isn’t really that important ans I guess a lot of people have this mentality. There are of course also people that always want the new and best graphics in a game and can entertain themselves by playing the game just because the graphics are great. I don’t understand this at all. The gameplay should be the important factor in how good a game is and any old game can have just as entertaining gameplay as a new one. Maybe even better because it was made in a time the game designers wasn’t out of ideas yet. I really hope we never stop playing the good old retro games.
The fact is gameplay is and will be the major factor of games which means old and new games can be just as fun. I highly doubt any graphic or revolutionary invention will kill off the retro games as they will always have the nostalgia and charm to them. At least I for one will never forget the countless days I have spent in front of games that take up less memory than MS Paint does today. I love games, both old and new.
